Fat Dissolving

Refine stubborn areas, without surgery.

Performed bySophie Gatward, NP

Fat-dissolving injections break down small, stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise — most commonly under the chin.

Once destroyed, the treated fat cells are naturally cleared by the body, refining the contour of the area.

Ideal for

  • Submental fat (“double chin”)
  • Jowl area
  • Small, localized fat pockets

What to expect

  1. Consultation & assessment: Sophie Gatward, NP, reviews your health history and goals and checks that the fullness is a small pocket of fat, rather than loose skin or another cause that needs a different approach.
  2. Treatment day: The area is cleansed and may be marked, then a series of small injections is placed into the fat. The appointment usually takes 20–30 minutes.
  3. Right after: Swelling and tenderness are expected for several days, and swelling can be quite noticeable. Bruising, numbness or firmness in the area are also common.
  4. Following weeks: As your body gradually clears the treated fat cells, the area can look more refined over about 4–6 weeks.
  5. Series & long-term: Most people need more than one session to reach their goal. Results are long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable.

Aftercare tips

  • Follow the personalized instructions you receive at your appointment — they take priority over these general tips.
  • A cool compress wrapped in a clean cloth, used gently for short periods, can help ease swelling and discomfort.
  • Sleeping with your head slightly raised for the first few nights may help swelling settle.
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and hot tubs for the first day or two.
  • Don't massage the treated area or put pressure on it unless you've been told to.
  • Keeping your weight stable helps you maintain your results over time.

Possible side effects

  • Swelling, which can be quite noticeable, along with tenderness and bruising — these usually settle over several days.
  • Numbness, tingling or firmness in the treated area, which usually fades gradually.
  • Redness or small bumps at the injection points.
  • Rare but serious: irritation of a nerve near the jawline, which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, or trouble swallowing. These are usually temporary but should be reported to the clinic right away.
  • Rare but serious: skin injury, such as an open sore, or infection at the injection site — contact the clinic if you notice a sore, spreading redness or worsening pain.
If something doesn’t feel right after your treatment, call the clinic at 416-604-0040. For severe symptoms — such as trouble breathing, vision changes, or skin turning white, grey or dusky — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently asked questions

How many treatments will I need?

Most people need 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Is it a weight-loss treatment?

No — it's designed for small, localized areas in people close to their goal weight.

Does fat dissolving hurt?

Most people feel warmth, stinging or a burning sensation during and shortly after the injections, and the area can feel tender for several days. Cooling or numbing can be used to help keep you comfortable.

Will the fat come back?

The treated fat cells are cleared by your body, so results are long-lasting. However, the fat cells that remain can still grow with weight gain, which is why a stable weight matters.

How long before an event should I book?

Swelling can be noticeable for several days and results develop over 4–6 weeks, so allow at least two weeks before an event. If you want to see the result of a full series, start several months ahead.

Who is not a good candidate for fat dissolving?

It isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding or with an infection in the area, and because it treats fat, not loose skin, it may not help if laxity is the main concern. Some medical conditions and medications, such as blood thinners, are also reviewed at your consultation.

Individual results vary. All treatments require an in-person consultation and medical assessment to confirm they're right for you. Content on this page is for general information and is not medical advice.
