Thinking about Botox for the first time? Here's how a first appointment works, from booking and consultation to the first two weeks, and who should wait.

If you're getting Botox for the first time, it's normal to have questions. Will it hurt? How long does it take? When will you see a difference? This guide walks you through a first Botox appointment in Toronto at Bloor West Medspa, from booking to follow-up, so you know what to expect.

A quick note on names: “Botox” is the word most people use for botulinum toxin injections. Botox® is one brand, and Dysport® and Nuceiva® are others used at the clinic. They all work in a similar way. You can read more about botulinum toxin injections at Bloor West Medspa.

Step 1: Booking your first Botox appointment

Every new client starts with a consultation, so that's what you're booking first. You can book online, call 416-604-0040, or send a text or WhatsApp message to 416-580-4600. All the options are on our contact and booking page.

A little planning helps:

  • Leave time before big events. Results take 3 to 14 days to appear, and any bruising needs time to fade. Booking at least two weeks before a wedding, photos or a trip is a sensible rule of thumb.
  • Make a list for your consultation. Include medical conditions, medications, supplements, allergies and any past cosmetic injections.
  • Think about your goals. Which lines bother you most? Would you like a subtle softening or a more noticeable change? There are no wrong answers.

The clinic is at 2461 Bloor Street West, Unit 4, in Bloor West Village, a short walk from Jane subway station. Botox usually has no downtime, so you can head back to work or carry on with your day afterwards.

Step 2: Your consultation and medical assessment

At your first visit, you'll meet Sophie Gatward, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) with advanced training in medical aesthetics. You can learn more about Sophie and her approach. The consultation is your chance to ask questions, and it usually covers:

  • Your health history: medical conditions, medications, supplements, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and past treatments.
  • Your goals: what you'd like to change, and how subtle you want the result to be.
  • How your face moves: you'll be asked to frown, raise your brows and smile, so Sophie can see which muscles are creating each line.
  • Your plan: which areas to treat, what results are realistic, how long they typically last, and a clear quote before any treatment begins.
  • Risks and aftercare: possible side effects, what to avoid afterwards, and when to call the clinic.

Botox softens lines caused by muscle movement, such as forehead lines, frown lines between the brows and crow's feet. It doesn't add volume. That's what dermal filler is for. If you're not sure which one fits your concern, our guide to the difference between Botox and filler can help.

Before any treatment, you'll give your informed consent. Depending on your plan, treatment may happen at the same visit or at a separate appointment. Either way, you should never feel rushed. Take the time you need to decide.

Step 3: What happens during the treatment

The treatment itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Your skin is cleansed first, and the injection points may be marked. Sophie then uses an ultra-fine needle to place a few small injections into the targeted muscles.

Most people describe the feeling as a quick pinch. Right afterwards you may see small raised bumps, a bit like mosquito bites, and some pinpoint redness. These usually fade within an hour or so.

You can go back to most of your usual activities right away. For the rest of the day, avoid lying flat, strenuous exercise, and rubbing or massaging the treated area. You'll receive full aftercare instructions before you leave, and our Botox aftercare and preparation tips cover the basics.

Step 4: The first two weeks after Botox

Botox doesn't work right away. The treated muscles relax gradually, so the change builds over several days. Here's a realistic timeline for most expression lines, although results vary from person to person:

  • The first day or two: any redness or tenderness settles. You won't see much change yet, and that's normal.
  • From about day 3: you may start to notice lines softening and the muscles feeling weaker when you frown or raise your brows.
  • By about two weeks: the full effect is usually visible. This is the right time to judge your result.

Common side effects

Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. The most common include:

  • Redness, mild swelling or tenderness where the needle went in
  • A small bruise, which is more likely if you bruise easily or take something that thins the blood
  • A mild headache
  • Less commonly, a heavy feeling in the brow or a slightly drooping eyelid or brow. This is temporary, but let the clinic know if it happens.
If something doesn't feel right, call the clinic at 416-604-0040. Rarely, the effect of botulinum toxin can spread beyond the treated area. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing, or muscle weakness away from the treated area. Do the same for signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the tongue or throat.

Step 5: Your follow-up and what comes next

Around two weeks is a natural time to check in. If one side looks stronger than the other, or a line hasn't softened as much as you hoped, Sophie can review it with you. Ask at your appointment how follow-up works for your plan.

Results typically last about three to four months. As the effect wears off, movement slowly returns and lines gradually reappear. Many people plan their next appointment when they notice movement coming back, but there's no set schedule you have to follow. How often you return is up to you.

Botox is often one part of a bigger plan. For lost volume, some people later consider filler, and skin rejuvenation treatments can help with tone and texture.

Who should wait before having Botox

Botox isn't right for everyone, or not right now. Your health history is reviewed at every consultation. Let Sophie know if any of these apply, as treatment may need to wait or be adjusted:

  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. Cosmetic Botox isn't recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • You have an infection, cold sore, rash or active breakout in the area to be treated.
  • You have a nerve or muscle condition, such as myasthenia gravis, or you've had a reaction to a botulinum toxin product before.
  • You take certain medications, such as some antibiotics or blood thinners. Don't stop any prescribed medication on your own. Just bring a complete list.
  • You have an important event in the next two weeks.

If any of these apply, mention it when you book so you can plan the right timing or talk through other options.

Next step: If you're ready to plan your first Botox appointment, book a consultation with Sophie. You'll get honest advice on whether Botox suits your goals, what results are realistic for you, and how to prepare.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a first Botox appointment take?

Allow extra time for your first visit, because the consultation and medical assessment come first. The treatment itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.

When will I see results after my first Botox treatment?

You may notice changes within a few days, with the full effect usually visible by about two weeks. Results vary, so wait the full two weeks before judging.

Can I have Botox before a wedding or big event?

Yes, as long as you plan ahead. Book at least two weeks before the event, so the result has time to develop fully and any small bruise has time to fade.

What happens if I stop getting Botox?

Muscle movement slowly returns, and lines gradually go back to how they would have looked without treatment. Stopping doesn't make lines worse, though your skin will keep aging naturally.
